1798 -1863 · French romanticism, color and movement
Eugène Delacroix renews history painting with fiery color, powerful diagonals and subjects where literature, revolution, Orient and animal world become experiences of movement.
Eugène Delacroix was born in Charenton-Saint-Maurice in 1798. Trained in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, he studied Rubens and Venetian colorists at the Louvre, while attending Géricault. Dante's Boat, presented at the Salon of 1822, immediately asserts a painting where body, water, flame and emotion are linked by color. Two years later, Scenes from the Scio Massacres gave the Greek War of Independence a tragic relevance, without central heroes or easy consolation. The Death of Scio, exhibited in 1827, pushes the tangle of figures, fabrics, animals and reds even further. Delacroix does not build only by contour: he does circulate light through colorful chords and juxtaposed touches. In 1830, the July Revolution inspired Liberty Leading the People. The woman with the flag, both real and allegorical, crossed the barricade with fighters of different classes and transformed the contemporary event into a lasting image. The trip made in 1832 to Morocco and Algeria profoundly expanded her repertoire. Notebooks, watercolors and souvenirs nourished scenes of horsemen, lion hunts, interiors and costumes for decades. Women of Algiers in their apartment, presented in 1834, combines chromatic richness, observation and interior silence. Delacroix then receives important public settings at the Bourbon Palace, Luxembourg, the Louvre and the Saint-Sulpice church. His Journal reveals constant reflection on music, literature and the means of painting. Until his death in 1863, he also continued animal fights, religious subjects and Shakespeare. A faithful reproduction must preserve the relationships of complementary colors, the flexibility of the contours, the luminous accents, the speed of the diagonals and the unity of a composition which appears spontaneous while being prepared at length. The selection "Masterpieces by Eugène Delacroix" notably compares Liberty Leading the People - Eugène Delacroix and Femmes d'Alger in their apartment - Eugène Delacroix. His reading favors movement.
In Delacroix, color does not adorn the story: it becomes its energy, connecting bodies, light and movement even before the subject is named.
