1808 -1879 · social realism, satire and modern life
Honoré Daumier observes courts, transport, work and literature with an incisive line and powerful volumes, giving ordinary gestures a social as well as universal scope.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was born in Marseille in 1808 and arrived in Paris as a child. After training as a designer and lithographer, he collaborated with La Caricature then with Charivari. The illustrated press became his great theater: politicians, magistrates, lawyers, bourgeois, collectors and travelers were captured there by their silhouettes, their postures and their contradictions. A caricature of King Louis-Philippe in Gargantua earned him several months in prison in 1832. Far from calming him down, this experience refined a satire which attacked the mechanisms of power rather than just resemblance. Daumier produced nearly four thousand lithographs and numerous wood engravings. He models also busts of parliamentarians, whose exaggerated volumes then serve his drawing. Her painting, long less known to the public, often abandons direct mockery for fraternal gravity. The Laundress transforms the ascent of a staircase with a child and a heavy package into an image of daily work. The Third Class Wagon places the viewer among tight travelers, making one feel industrialization, fatigue and dignity. The pleading lawyer condenses professional eloquence into a mouth, a hand and a black dress. Daumier's painting is based on synthetic drawing, warm earths, deep shadows and figures often constructed like sculptures. His eyesight declines at the end of his life; he died in Valmondois in 1879, a year after a major retrospective organized by his friends. A faithful reproduction must preserve the masses, the readability of the silhouettes, the nuanced browns, the direction of the gesture and this economy of detail which makes each attitude immediately human. The selection "Honoré Daumier’s masterpieces", the direction of the gesture and this economy of detail which makes each attitude immediately human. The selection "Honoré Daumier’s Masterpieces", notably compares Le Wagon de trois class - Honoré Daumier and La Laundress - Honoré Daumier. His reading favors the material.
Daumier recognizes an entire society in a posture: the weight of a package, the emphasis of a pleading or the silence of a wagon is enough to reveal a world.
