1703 -1770 · French rococo, mythology and decorative arts
François Boucher transforms Venus, Love and pastoral care into a world of pearly flesh, fabrics, clouds and light colors that defines the elegance of French rococo.
François Boucher was born in Paris in 1703 into a family linked to decorative arts. He began as a designer and engraver, worked for the publisher Jean de Jullienne on the reproduction of Watteau's drawings and won first prize from the Academy in 1723. His stay in Italy from 1728 to 1731 broadened his culture to Baroque masters, the Roman countryside and Venetian color. Received at the Royal Academy in 1734, Boucher quickly became one of the most sought-after artists in Paris. His production embraced religious painting, portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, theater sets and above all mythology. Venus, Diana, the Graces, nymphs and loves allowed him to unite bodies, draperies, flowers and sky in a soft and luminous surface. The Bath of Venus or The Toilet of Venus not only tell a myth: they construct a sensory universe adapted to refined apartments of the 18th century. Boucher also reinvents pastoral care by populating an ideal landscape of shepherds dressed in silk, far from real work but close to comic opera and games of seduction. Madame de Pompadour becomes his protector and commissions paintings, sets and projects from him. His influence goes beyond the canvas. He provided models to the factories of Beauvais and Gobelins, to the porcelain of Vincennes then of Sèvres, to engravers and decorators. In 1765, he achieved both plus high artistic functions of the kingdom: first painter to the king and director of the Royal Academy. His palette of light roses, blues and greens, his creamy touch and his taste for artifice were then criticized by Diderot and by the defenders of neoclassicism. Boucher died in Paris in 1770. A faithful reproduction must preserve the beaded skin tones, the blue-pink passages, the flexibility of the draperies, the faded contours, the lightness of the putti and the decorative unity of the composition. The "Masterpieces of François Boucher" selection notably compares The Birth of Venus - François Boucher and The Bath of Venus - François Boucher. His reading favors composition.
At Boucher, mythology becomes a theater of materials and colors where the nude, the cloud, the silk and the flower belong to the same decorative continuity.
