1822 -1899 · animal painting, rural work and independence
Rosa Bonheur raises horses, oxen, deer and wild animals to the scale of great painting thanks to rigorous anatomical observation, powerful movement and deep attention to living things.
Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, known as Rosa Bonheur, was born in Bordeaux in 1822 into a family of artists. Her father Raymond encouraged her to draw and copy masters at the Louvre. Very early on, she chose the animal as her main subject, despite the academic hierarchy which reserves large formats for history and despite the obstacles imposed on women artists. She frequented farms, markets, slaughterhouses and countryside to study breeds, musculature, coat, traction and behavior. She frequented farms, markets, slaughterhouses and countryside to study breeds, musculature, coat, traction and behavior. This direct observation sometimes required administrative authorization for cross-dressing allowing her to wear pants in places where women's clothing would be impractical. Noticed at the Salon in 1841, Bonheur obtained a medal in 1845 then became the revelation of 1848. The State commissioned Labourage Nivernais from him, completed in 1849: two teams of oxen turned the earth in a panoramic composition which gave the animals the grandeur of an ancient frieze. The triumph of the Horse Market at the Salon of 1853 confirmed her international reputation. To prepare for this vast scene, she regularly observed the Parisian market on Boulevard de l'Hôpital and multiplied anatomical studies and movement drawings. The swirling horses combined precision, power and contemporary energy. To prepare for this vast scene, she regularly observed the Parisian market on Boulevard de l'Hôpital and multiplied anatomical studies and movement drawings. The swirling horses combined precision, power and contemporary energy. Happiness travels to Auvergne, Nivernais, Landes and Pyrenees to study the world rural. From 1860, she lived at the Château de By, near Fontainebleau, with Nathalie Micas, then with the American painter Anna Klumpke. She welcomed many animals, domestic and wild, including lions, and painted deer, eagles and wild animals with the same individuality. The first female artist to receive the Legion of Honor in 1865, she became an officer in 1894. She died in By in 1894. She died in By in 1899. A faithful reproduction must preserve the anatomy, differences in coat, muscle tension, dust, light of the landscape and the relationship between animal, work and space. The selection "Masterpieces by Rosa Bonheur" notably compares Deer in the forest of Fontainebleau - Rosa Bonheur and The Horse Market - Rosa Bonheur. Its reading favors atmosphere.
Rosa Bonheur does not treat the animal as an accessory: she gives it weight, character, energy and historical place to the point of shifting the very hierarchy of genders.
