Muromachi, 1420 -1506 · Travel to China and the Japanese ink revolution
Sesshû Tôyo was born in 1420 and died in 1506. A Zen monk trained in Kyoto in Shokoku-ji, he studied painting in the Shûbun tradition then settled in Yamaguchi under the patronage of the Ouchi clan. In 1467, he accompanied a trade mission to Ming China and directly observed ancient landscapes, workshops and paintings. Back in Japan, he did not simply copy Chinese models: he gave them angular contours, more powerful structures and an immediately recognizable brush energy. Landscape in splashed ink, dated 1495, condenses mountains, trees, house and boat into superimposed spots; the inscription also makes it a farewell gift to a student. Huike offering his arm to Bodhidharma, from 1496, contrasts the silent mass of the master with the dramatic determination of the disciple. The autumn and winter landscapes use steep, sharp empty rocks, while the View of Amanohashidate, painted at the end of his life, brings together the observation of a Japanese site in a vast lived cartography. The "Sesshû Tôyo" selection notably compares Birds and Flowers and Landscape of the Four Seasons: Winter. His reading favors space.
Sesshû never shows a single way of painting in ink: splashing, broken line, observed map and Zen figure become proof of his freedom.
