Simon de Vlieger was born in Rotterdam around 1600 -1601 and became one of the great masters of the Dutch navy of the 17th century. He worked in Rotterdam, joined the Delft guild in 1634, then moved to Amsterdam before ending his life in Weesp. His career went beyond easel painting: he designed tapestries, stained glass windows, etchings and organ shutters for Rotterdam's Grote Kerk.
