1853 -1926 · Warsaw, Ukraine and modernity of the Polish landscape
Stanisław Masłowski was born in Włodawa in 1853 and died in Warsaw in 1926. He studied at the Warsaw Drawing Class with Wojciech Gerson and Aleksander Kamiÿski, then shared the community of young realists gathered around the workshop of the European Hotel. Between 1875 and 1886, his regular trips to Ukraine gave him a repertoire of steppes, horsemen, villages and Cossack figures observed directly. Jarema's Dumka, painted in 1879, combines horizontal landscape, music and popular memory: the player, the horses and the flowery expanse compose less of an anecdote than a meditation on Ukrainian space. Masłowski gradually moves away from academic narration for favor light, atmosphere and studies on the motif. He practices oil, but watercolor becomes one of his most personal means through its transparency and speed. His research involves realism, certain lessons from impressionism, divisionism and Secession without being reduced to a school. Travels in Italy, Paris, Sicily and Tunisia further broaden his palette. His work links rural observation, landscape poetry and the modernization of Polish painting. Masłowski listens to the landscape: in Jarema's La Dumka, the music seems to extend into the horizon, the horses and flowers of the steppe.
