Stanislas Victor Édouard Lépine was born in Caen in 1835 and died in Paris in 1892. Installed in the capital at a very young age, he started at the Salon in 1859 and worked with Camille Corot, whose tonal construction and sensitivity to atmospheres he retained. The influence of Johan Barthold Jongkind can also be seen in his taste for ports, moving skies and reflections. Lépine paints Paris at promenade height: quays, bridges, canals, islands, boats and still semi-rural neighborhoods. Lépine paints Paris at promenade height: quays, bridges, canals, islands, boats and still semi-rural neighborhoods. The Île de la Cité and the Île Saint-Louis seen from the Pont d'Austerlitz combines vast river breathing with the dense silhouette of the city. Rue de Norvins retains the village character of Montmartre, while let the Seine at Bercy observe the activities of the river without emphasis. The moon effects of the Saint-Denis canal show a more intimate research into deaf values. Invited to the first impressionist exhibition of 1874, Lépine nevertheless remains independent: his touch is free but measured, his palette often silvery, his space calmly constructed. His discreet career today offers an essential link between Corot, Jongkind and the painters of modern life. The "Stanislas Lépine" selection notably compares L'Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis seen from the Pont d'Austerlitz and La Rue de Norvins, Montmartre.
Lépine does not seek the event: he waits for the water, the sky and the facades to grant Paris in the same light.
