1483 · Boccaccio, Florence and four wedding panels
Browse the cycle of Nastagio degli Onesti designed by Botticelli: forest, apparition, punishment, banquet and marriage unfold a short story of the Decameron in an elegant and disturbing line.
Painted in 1483 to celebrate the wedding of Giannozzo Pucci and Lucrezia Bini, the four panels of the History of Nastagio degli Onesti formed a spalliera intended to decorate a Florentine residence. Botticelli designed the compositions with the participation of his workshop, notably Bartolomeo di Giovanni and Jacopo del Sellaio. The story comes from the eighth short story of the fifth day of Boccaccio's Decameron. Nastagio, a young nobleman from Ravenna rejected by Paolo Traversari's daughter, retires to the Class pine forest. He sees a naked woman pursued by dogs and a knight. The specter reveals that she had rejected him, causing his suicide; every Friday, they repeat the chase and murder in hell. Nastagio then invites her beloved and her family to a banquet in the forest so that they can witness the apparition. Frightened, the young woman finally agrees to marry him. The first three panels, today at the Prado, multiply several moments of the story in the same continuous landscape; the fourth, in a private collection, represents the wedding banquet. Vertical pines, architecture, Florentine costumes, dogs and rapid gestures unite decorative beauty and moral violence. The cycle bears witness as much to the literary culture of the elites as to the tensions surrounding marriage, desire and power.
