1609 -1656 · Amsterdam, Rembrandt and the philosopher reader
Born and died in Amsterdam, from 1609 to 1656, Salomon Koninck belonged to a family of artists and goldsmiths. He trained with David Colijns, François Venant and Nicolaes Moeyaert, with links also noted to Pieter Lastman. Member of the guild of Saint-Luc in the early 1630s, he frequented the environment of Hendrick van Uylenburgh and was closely familiar with the works of Rembrandt, then recently settled in Amsterdam. Koninck copied certain compositions of the master and assimilated his chiaroscuro, his meditative old men, his heavy fabrics and his way of giving accessories moral significance. He painted portraits, religious scenes and historical subjects, but stood out particularly by interiors populated by philosophers, rabbis or Fathers of the Church. A Philosopher, dated 1635, belongs to this genre. The character does not pose for an official effigy: he reads, thinks or writes in the middle of a world of objects. Open and closed books, leaves, parchments and curtains construct a true portrait of knowledge. The materials are treated with the attention to detail expected of a goldsmith's son: shards of fabric, edges of paper, bindings and metal capture the light. However, this abundance contains a dimension of vanity. Human study accumulates, while the age of the philosopher recalls the passage of time. Chiaroscuro therefore does not only dramatize the piece; he opposes what remains in thought to what disappears. The "Solomon Koninck" selection notably compares Un Philosophe. His reading favors color.
At Koninck, books illuminate as much as the invisible lamp: knowledge becomes a fragile material placed in front of an aging face.
