Since 1924 · Dream, chance and emancipation of the image
Surrealism was formed in Paris around the Manifesto published by André Breton in 1924, but its roots lie in Dada, poetry, Freud, dreams and the traumas of the First World War. Painters, photographers, filmmakers and writers seek to bypass rational control through automatism, chance, collage and the unexpected encounter of distant elements. Dalí gives the dream an almost photographic precision; Magritte makes the most ordinary objects disturbing; Tanguy people of mineral horizons; Ernst invents rubbing and decal; Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo and Dorothea Tanning construct mythologies where identity and space are transform. Frida Kahlo is often brought closer to the movement, although she resisted this label and anchored her images in her own Mexican experience. The first works in this selection - self-portraits, political portraits and still lifes by Kahlo - show precisely that the surreal can emerge from pain, memory and symbol without being reduced to the story of a dream. The "Surrealism" selection notably compares Frida in flames (Self-portrait in a sunflower) and Portrait of Stalin (unfinished). His reading favors movement.
Surrealism doesn't just ask what the image represents: it asks what secret forces become possible when things stop obeying their usual place.
