Europe and America, circa 1880 -1910 · Dream, myth and subjectivity
Symbolism was born as a literary movement in France in the 1880s and received a manifesto from Jean Moréas in 1886. It quickly spread in the visual arts across Europe and North America. Against rationalism, materialism and quasi-scientific observation associated with naturalism, artists want to express an emotion or an idea. It is therefore not a unique style, but a constellation. Gustave Moreau populates his precious architectures of sphinxes and Salomé; Odilon Redon starts from nature to invent floating eyes, mental flowers and hybrid creatures; Böcklin transforms the island, the sea and the cypress into landscapes of death. Gauguin simplifies color and outline to create a subjective image, while Klimt connects allegory to Viennese Secession ornament. In Northern and Eastern Europe, Munch, Gallen-Kallela, Vasnetsov and Enckell combine modern anxiety, national epic and mythology. Biblical, literary or fantastic subjects never provide a fixed equation: line, color and composition must recreate an inner experience in the viewer. The "Symbolism" selection notably compares Self-portrait as a saint (study for Rencontre, 1913) and The Beethovenfries/Frieze Beethoven. His reading favors light.
The symbol is not a code to be solved once and for all: it is an image precise enough to orient the dream and open enough to never close it.
Course & style
Moreau, Puvis de Chavannes, Redon and Böcklin give myth a new subjective power. This milestone illuminates the "Symbolism" collection by favoring light.
The Moréas manifesto affirms suggestion and idea against realistic description.
Klimt, Munch, Gauguin and many national homes connect dreams to Art Nouveau, expressionism and abstraction.
The scene represents less an event than a state of desire, fear or revelation. This trait guides a reading of "Symbolism" centered on light.
Tones no longer describe just real light; they give a temperature to the idea.
Sphinx, saint, mermaid or double introduce a presence impossible to fully explain.
Flower, ornament, forest and architecture become active extensions of consciousness.
Explore by universe
Double, rite, revelation and ornament allow us to explore an international movement which always prefers to suggest rather than demonstrate.
Self-portraits and twin figures show the self as dialogue, conflict or apparition.
For psychology. Reading "Symbolism" through light.Processions and calvaries move the sacred towards a modern experience of the group.
For the ceremonialLight, gesture or vision breaks the everyday world and makes the invisible momentarily sensitive.
For the mysteryIn Klimt in particular, motif and figure merge until the border between body and decor is abolished.
For the materialThe self-portrait as a saint transforms the angular body into a spiritual appearance and a questioning of the double.
Marker work of SymbolismThe Beethoven Friesland unites desire, trial, arts and deliverance in a monumental surface of gold and ornament.
