Tadeusz Makowski was born in O¹wiêcim in 1882 and died in Paris in 1932. He studied literature at the Jagiellonian University while attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow between 1903 and 1908. Having left for France at the end of 1908, he settled permanently in Paris. In contact with the cubists of Montparnasse - Le Fauconnier, Gleizes, Metzinger, Léger and Archipenko - he simplified volumes and introduced geometry into his landscapes, still lifes and figures. During the First World War, his stays in Brittany and the French countryside opened him up to popular art, the peasant world and a more seemingly naive painting.
