Since 1947 · Farmington, house museum and in situ impressionism
Hill-Stead is a home, a landscape and an art museum. The Farmington, Connecticut home was designed in 1901 by Theodate Pope Riddle, one of the first recognized female architects in the United States, for her parents Alfred Atmore and Ada Brooks Pope. Industrialist and collector, Alfred Pope bought between 1888 and 1907 French works still considered daring in America. Monet, Degas, Manet, Cassatt and Whistler thus enter into a domestic interior where paintings, Japanese prints, sculptures, furniture and decorative objects form a coherent whole. When Theodate died in 1946, his will transformed the property into a museum; Hill-Stead opens to the public in 1947 with the desire to maintain the works and furniture in their historical layout. This in situ conservation deeply distinguishes the place. The four reproductions selected show the preferences of the Pope family. In the Grinding wheels, white jelly effect, Monet constructs winter light in colored layers. Degas's Dancers in Pink contrasts the discipline of drawing with the moment of movement. Sea fishing boats transform the marine surface into energy touch. The bright sun finally brings the landscape back to a bright focus. Presented in the house which hosted them, these paintings maintain an intimate scale and a direct relationship with daily life. The "Hill-Stead Museum" selection " notably compares Les Meules, white jelly effect and Dancers in pink. His reading favors details.
In Hill-Stead, impressionism is not isolated in a gallery: it remains among furniture, books, gardens and family memory.
