1857 -1914 · Norway, folk tale and fantastic nature
Theodor Kittelsen was born in Kragerø in 1857 and died in Jeløya in 1914. Intended first for a craft profession, he received help from patrons which allowed him to study drawing in Christiania then in Munich. He wanted to become a painter, but it was above all as a designer and illustrator that he found his most powerful voice. In collaboration with writers and folklorists, he gave lasting form to trolls, princesses, animals and heroes of Norwegian tales. Kittelsen does not simply place creatures in the landscape: he discovers their bodies within a stump, a mountain, a reflection or a cloud. Nøkken does not simply place creatures in the landscape: he discovers their bodies within a stump, a mountain, a reflection or a cloud. Nøkken does not simply place creatures in the landscape: he discovers their bodies within a stump, a mountain, a reflection or confused with water; fear arises from the uncertainty of the gaze. Soria Moria, on the contrary, shows a young traveler attracted by a luminous palace on the horizon, which has become a national image of dreams and accomplishment. In his series Troldskab and Svartedauen, the artist combines text and image, humor, melancholy and historical memory. The emaciated figure of Pesta personifies the Black Death through rural stories. Installed successively in several regions, notably Lofoten and Eggedal, Kittelsen transforms the direct experience of the seasons and solitude into visual mythology. In Kittelsen, the fantastic does not arrive in nature: it was already there, hidden in the water, the rock, the tree and the silence.
