1852 -1896 · Giverny and American impressionism
Theodore Robinson was born in Irasburg, Vermont in 1852 and died in New York in 1896. After a youth in Wisconsin and his first classes in Chicago, he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, then left for Paris in 1876. The workshops of Carolus-Duran and Jean-Léon Gérôme gave him solid training in figure and drawing. Back in France in the 1880s, he settled regularly in Giverny between 1887 and 1892 and became one of the rare American painters in the colony close to Claude Monet. Robinson adopted outdoor painting, lighter colors and a visible touch, but retained a rigorous construction and a marked interest in it perspective. The Seine Valley from the hills of Giverny uses a high point of view: paths, river and fields are ordered like a luminous map without losing the atmospheric sensation. Its bridges, churches and farms show village life beyond just Monet's garden. Girl at the piano at the same time recalls his attachment to the contemplative figure. Robinson also experimented with framing inspired by photography, which he used as a composition aid.
