1802 -1842 · Norway, Alps and European romantic landscape
Fjords, glaciers, waterfalls and forests traveled on the motif make Thomas Fearnley the great cosmopolitan of Norwegian romanticism.
Thomas Fearnley was born in 1802 in Fredrikshald, now Halden, and died in Munich in 1842, at the age of thirty-nine. After brief military training in Christiania, he took courses at the new School of Drawing then continued his studies at the academies of Copenhagen and Stockholm. Orders from the Swedish court brought him initial recognition, but Norwegian nature remained his essential subject. During his travels in 1824 and 1826, he discovered the Telemark then the West Fjords and met JC Dahl at Ytre Kroken. During his travels in 1824 and 1826, he discovered Telemark then the West Fjords and met JC Dahl at Ytre Kroken. Upon contact with Dahl, his drawings and oil studies became freer, more precise and closer to the immediate experience of the site. Fearnley travels then Europe: Dresden, Munich, the Alps, Italy, Switzerland, France and England. He walked from Munich to Italy in 1832 and stayed more than two years south, particularly studying light. The upper glacier of Grindelwald and Labro Falls become the emblematic motifs of a sublime observed rather than invented. The Waterfowl Hunt combines landscape, human activity and a humid atmosphere in a scene where man remains subject to natural expanse. The Waterfowl Hunt combines landscape, human activity and a humid atmosphere in a scene where man remains subject to natural expanse. Prematurely dying of typhus, Fearnley nevertheless leaves a considerable collection of studies and drawings, preserved thanks to his family. His view unites the truth of the outdoors and the monumental construction of the landscape romantic. The "Thomas Fearnley" selection notably compares The Waterfowl Hunt. His reading favors details.
Fearnley travels to experience nature: drawing captures the moment, then painting restores its monumental scale.
