Thomas Wilmer Dewing was born in Boston in 1851 and died in New York in 1938. After studying at the Lowell Institute, he left for Paris in 1876 and attended the Académie Julian. Back in the United States, he taught at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, then moved to New York in 1880. With his wife, the artist Maria Oakey Dewing, he led the colony of artists from Cornish, New Hampshire, for many years. Dewing specialized in ethereal images of women, alone or united in foggy interiors and landscapes.
