At twenty-seven years old, an inner experience that he interpreted as the announcement of an artistic destiny pushed him towards painting, but he prepared this vocation for a long time before taking courses in Munich with Simon Hollósy then in Karlsruhe. From the 1890s, he traveled tirelessly in search of what he called solar light: Dalmatia, Bosnia, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon offered him motifs capable of supporting a monumental ambition. Csontvâry worked on site from precise observation, then intensified color, scale and perspective. Baalbek unfolds ruins, plains and mountains in an almost supernatural clarity; the solitary Cedar makes the tree a figure of resistance, while the Lebanese Cedar Pilgrimage transforms the landscape into a symbolic ceremony.
