Thomas John Thomson was born in Claremont, Ontario in 1877 and died at Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park, in 1917. After a youth near Owen Sound, he worked in commercial graphics in Seattle and then Toronto. At Grip Limited, his meeting with JEH MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Frederick Varley, Lawren Harris and other future members of the Group of Seven encouraged him to devote more time to painting. From 1912, Thomson discovered Algonquin Park. Guide, fisherman and canoeist, he stayed there from spring to fall and painted on small transportable panels, directly in front of the motif. Rapids, lakes, undergrowth, snow, fires and changes of sky were seized through blocks of color and nervous gestures. In the workshop, certain studies become large canvases. The Gray Pine isolates a flexible tree in front of the water and the hills; The West Wind transforms branches, waves and clouds into the same energy. The Pool brings together the saturated colors of autumn around dark water.
