1490 -1564 · Florence, miniature and devout Renaissance
Tommaso di Stefano Lunetti was born in Florence in 1490 and died there in 1564. He grew up in a family of artists: his father Stefano was an architect and miniaturist, while his mother belonged to the family of illuminators Gherardo and Monte di Giovanni. Vasari presents him as a student of Lorenzo di Credi, but his first training probably took place in his father's studio, where he learned the meticulousness of drawing, the preparation of colors and the art of miniatures. From 1510-1511, Tommaso participated under the direction of Andrea di Cosimo Feltrini in the decoration of the facade of Santa Maria dei Servi in Florence. From 1510-1511, Tommaso paintings, banners and restorations, then became one of the Florentine specialists in drappelloni, large fabric paintings intended for ceremonies. His Portrait of a Man combines precise outline, dark background and psychological observation; The Adoration of the Shepherds on the contrary brings together architecture, devout figures and depth of landscape in a clear atmosphere inherited from Lorenzo di Credi and Fra Bartolomeo. Lunetti also acts as an architect, completing certain projects of his father and working for the Arte della Lana. Witness to the wills of Andrea del Sarto and Lorenzo di Credi, he fully belongs to the Florentine artistic network of the first 16th century. His work thus links miniature, easel painting, ephemeral decor and architecture. The "Tommaso Lunetti" selection notably compares Portrait of a Man and The Adoration of the Shepherds. Its reading favors atmosphere.
Lunetti preserves the miniaturist's eye in the painting: each face, fold and landscape contributes to meditative clarity.
