Thomas Wyck, also called Thomas Wijck, was probably born in Beverwijk between 1616 and 1621 and died in Haarlem in 1677. Documents on his youth remain rare, but his art testifies to a stay in Italy: sun-drenched courtyards, Levantine ports, southern alleys and architecture extend the tradition of Italianate Dutch painters. Returning to the Netherlands, he entered the guild of Saint Luke of Haarlem in 1642. Wyck distinguished himself above all by his interiors as artisans, scholars and alchemists. In The Alchemist, the man wearing a cap and dressed in fur was not caricatured as a charlatan; books, papers, globe, containers, herbs and hanging crocodile describe a world where research, domestic work and curiosity mingle. Side light orders disorder and transforms each object into a narrative clue. Painter and designer, Wyck also observes artists in their studio, spinners, weavers and popular classes. He traveled to England and his son Jan Wyck pursued a career as a painter of battles and hunts. Through his attention to modest spaces, tools and concentrated gestures, Thomas Wyck gave a quiet dignity to intellectual and manual work.
