Canberra · Project announced in 1967 · Museum opened in 1982
The National Gallery of Australia brings together Australian art, the largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world, as well as ensembles from Asia, the Pacific and international modernity.
The idea of a national gallery in Canberra took shape in the 20th century and came to fruition when Prime Minister Harold Holt announced in 1967 the construction of a museum for the national collection. Col Madigan is leading the design of one brutalist building based on a spiral progression, on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Construction began in 1973 and Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the gallery on October 12, 1982. The institution represents all of art australian, Asia, the Pacific, Europe and the Americas, with a major focus on women artists and First Nations cultures. More than one hundred and fifty-five thousand works now form the collection, including the most important in the world dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts. Monet, Cézanne, Matisse and Munch illustrate the quality of the international collection: impressionist series, modernist figure, Oceanian cutting and dramatic expression dialogues with Australian stories. The selection "National Gallery of Australia - Canberra, Australia" notably compares Meules, midday - Claude Monet and L'After-midi à Naples - Paul Cézanne. Her reading favors space.
In Canberra, the national collection puts Australia at the center of a visual network linking First Nations, Asia-Pacific and great experiences of global modernity.
