active in the second quarter of the 15th century · Siena and Gothic Renaissance
The Master of Observance is the name given in 1942 to a painter or group of artists active in Siena during the second quarter of the 15th century. The name comes from a triptych dated 1436 formerly placed in the church of Osservanza, near Siena. Long attributed to Sassetta then to the young Sano di Pietro, the works grouped around this ensemble were also compared to Vico di Luca. An important hypothesis today sees it as the production of a company or a collective workshop rather than the hand of a single individual. This caution does not erase the coherence of language. Episodes from the life of Saint Anthony the Abbot take place in rocky landscapes, cells, villages and interiors rendered with exceptional narrative delicacy. The Meeting of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul transforms the desert into a space for dialogue; The Temptation opposes spiritual solitude and demonic agitation; The Birth of the Virgin describes domestic gestures, furniture and feminine presence with warmth. The light colors, thin figures and still Gothic space are animated by a new observation of everyday life.
