1591 -1632 · Rome and French Caravaggesque naturalism
Valentin de Boulogne was born in Coulommiers in 1591 and died in Rome in 1632. Son of a master glassmaker, he probably joined Rome between 1610 and 1620 and spent his entire career there. He frequented the Bentvueghels, an informal brotherhood of Nordic artists known for its taverns and rites, rather than academic institutions. Caravaggio's example brought him popular models, tight framing, sharp light and truth of gestures, but Valentin transformed this naturalism with a deep melancholy and a refined color of Venetian inspiration. Fortune tellers, soldiers, players and musicians do not simply play an anecdote: everyone seems absorbed in a thought silent. In Musicians and Soldiers or A Musical Festival, instruments, hands and gazes build suspended time. Religious subjects gain the same human presence. The Last Supper brings the apostles together around a light which reveals faces without dissipating shadow; the Martyrdom of Saint Trial and Saint Martinian, commissioned in 1629 for Saint Peter's Basilica, elevates Caravaggesque realism to the rank of the great public altarpiece. Protected by the Barberinis, sought after after his death by Mazarin and Louis XIV, Valentin leaves a very rare work, of around sixty paintings preserved. His introspection would later influence David, Courbet and Manet. The "Valentin de Boulogne" selection puts particularly with regard to Musicians and Soldiers and The Fortune Teller. His reading favors the story.
Valentin slows down the Caravaggesque drama: in the shadows, a face or a hand becomes the place of a thought.
