1844 -1927 · Russian light, outdoors and evangelical history
Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov was born in Saint Petersburg in 1844 and died in 1927 at his estate in Borok, now Polenovo. Raised in a cultured family, he studied simultaneously at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and at the university. A large gold medal, shared with Ilia Repin, opened up a long trip to Europe for him. France, Italy and Germany developed his taste for outdoor painting, architecture and clearer light. Back in Russia, Polenov participated in the Russo-Turkish War as an artist, then settled in Moscow. Moscow Court, a peaceful everyday world. Grandma's Garden combines the freshness of the park with the memory of an aging home. These intimate landscapes renew Russian painting with their simplicity and breathable air. Polenov at the same time nourishes a historical and religious ambition. Christ and the sinner are the result of long research, travels to the Middle East and studies of architecture, costume and light; he wants to inscribe the Gospel in a credible human and material environment. Professor at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he notably influences Isaac Levitan and Constantin Korovine. In Borok, on the Oka, he built a house, workshops and theater, bringing together painting, architecture, music and popular education. A universal artist, Polenov combines observation of reality, humanist ideal and joy of light. The "Vassili Polenov" selection notably compares Moscow Court and Grandmother's Garden. His reading favors the story.
In Polenov, light makes the world habitable: a courtyard, a garden or a sacred story becomes a present experience.
