Vasily Ivanovich Surikov was born in Krasnoyarsk in 1848 into a Cossack family and died in Moscow in 1916. Supported by a Siberian patron, he moved to Saint Petersburg and studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. After participating in the decor of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, he moved to Moscow, a city whose architecture and ancient neighborhoods nourished his historical imagination. The Morning of the Execution of the Streltsy, completed in 1881, did not show the execution itself: looks, families, soldiers and the presence of Peter the Great condensed the last moment before the irreparable. Menchikov in Beriozovo locks the former favorite of the Tsar and his children into Siberian exile; space narrow gives silence monumental force. Boyarine Morozova, presented in 1887, draws an entire crowd around the defiant gesture of the religious dissident. Sourikov composes his large canvases based on countless studies of faces, hands, clothing and popular types. He seeks less to illustrate an event than to make the conflict of wills felt at the heart of a community.
