Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese because he was born in Verona in 1528, trained with Antonio Badile and in an environment marked by the classical architecture of Michele Sanmicheli. Installed in Venice at the beginning of the 1550s, he became with Titian and Tintoretto one of the great masters of 16th century Venetian painting. His decorations in San Sebastiano, the Marciana library, the Doge's Palace and Villa Barbaro show his mastery of ceilings, frescoes and vast cycles. Veronese excels in monumental banquets: The Wedding at Cana or The Meal at Levi's bring together religious stories, contemporary portraits, animals, servants and marble architecture. Interviewed by the Inquisition in 1573 for the liberties taken in a Last Supper, he preferred to change the title of the work rather than its composition. His clear palette, his green, pink and blue accords, as well as his sense of ceremonial space, had a lasting influence on European painting.
