From Géricault's launched horse to Delacroix's restless lake, the Walters paintings tell the story of how a family collection became a museum open over five millennia.

The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore was born from the collections brought together by William Thompson Walters then developed by his son Henry Walters. William began collecting in the 19th century and passed his ensemble on to Henry upon his death in 1894. This considerably broadened the field: antiquities, illuminated manuscripts, Asian arts, European paintings and decorative arts responded to each other in an encyclopedic ambition.
