Layered peaks, tight paths and elegant brushwork make Wen Boren an inventive heir of Wen Zhengming, capable of alternating simplicity and monumental complexity.

Wen Boren was born in 1502 in Suzhou and died in 1575. He is the nephew of Wen Zhengming, a great figure of the Wu school, in a family where painting, calligraphy, poetry and collection form an everyday language. Unlike his uncle, a model of the independent literate painter, Wen Boren earns a large living through painting. This professional situation does not weaken his erudition: it allows him to respond to varied formats and sponsors while deepening the family tradition. His landscapes follow two main directions. The first remains close to Wen Zhengming: fine lines, open space, light groves and discreet architecture create a refined atmosphere. The second goes back to Wang Meng, Yuan master of dense mountains. Peaks, ridges, hemp texture and vegetation points then accumulate in powerful compositions where the eye must seek its way. Landscape belongs to this culture of the mountain traveled. Rocks, trees, water and pavilions are not placed to produce an instantaneous view, but to organize a progression. The viewer climbs, bypasses, crosses and mentally stops in the scattered retreats.
