1830 -1860 · Düsseldorf School and birth of the Finnish landscape
Born in Helsinki in 1830, Werner Holmberg began by studying law while receiving artistic training from painters active in Finland. He definitively chose landscape and left in 1853 for Düsseldorf, one of the great European centers of its kind. In Hans Gude's studio and through contact with the local academy, he learned to combine direct studies of nature, realistic details and carefully organized composition. Holmberg traveled to Germany and Norway, but regularly returned to Finnish motifs through drawing and memory. Holmberg traveled to Germany and Norway, but regularly returned to Finnish motifs through drawing and memory. Häme roads, forests, farms, lakes and summer days became the subjects of a light painting where the path led the gaze between shadows and sun. Unlike the violent sublime, its romanticism is often based on a habitable nature: traveler, cart or house give a human scale without dominating the landscape. His fragile health abruptly interrupted this development; he died of tuberculosis in Düsseldorf in 1860, at the age of twenty-nine. Despite this limited corpus, Holmberg played a founding role in the affirmation of professional and internationally trained Finnish painting. Holmberg makes the path a silent story: it crosses the shadows, joins the light and invites the eye to physically enter the Finnish landscape.
