Heidelberg -Munich -Karlsruhe, 1851 -1917 · Realism and matter
Wilhelm Trübner was born in Heidelberg in 1851 and died in Karlsruhe in 1917. After initial training in Karlsruhe, he joined Munich in 1869 and became closer to Carl Schuch, Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Leibl's circle. Their realism favors observation, the pictorial value of the motif and a frank material rather than academic storytelling. Trübner began to explore the landscape in the early 1870s, particularly around Munich and in the Alpine regions. The Landscape of the Metropolitan Museum, dated 1910, is an oil on canvas measuring 75.9 × 61.5 cm. This late work retains the density of its workmanship: the keys organize the shots by color relationships, without seeking a smooth illusion. The site becomes a robust construction where greenery, soil and sky each have weight. Painter but also influential professor, Trübner participated in the renewal of German painting before expressionism. The "Wilhelm Trübner" selection notably compares Landscape. His reading favors the story.
Trübner does not describe the countryside leaf by leaf: he gives the landscape the density of a painted body.
