Idle soldiers, shiny fabrics and moral tensions make Willem Duyster a brief and incisive master of the guard scene.

Willem Cornelisz. Duyster was born in Amsterdam in 1599 and died there in 1635. The disappearance of the guild archives made his training difficult to reconstruct, but his works showed close links with Pieter Codde, Dirck Hals, Anthonie Palamedesz. and Thomas de Keyser. Duyster chose genre painting and specialized in elegant companies, games and especially guardhouses. In the United Provinces engaged in the long war against Spain, these military interiors became a highly sought-after genre. It does not represent the battle itself, but its margins: soldiers at rest, sharing of spoils, maintenance of weapons, games, quarrels and meetings with civilians. The uniform, breastplate, boot, flag and weapon offer a repertoire of textures as much as a commentary on discipline and power. The Guardhouse with Woman Begging Soldiers, painted around 1630, places a kneeling woman facing men seated in the shadows. His prayer, their looks and the seized or abandoned objects make the outcome uncertain. Duyster masters the contrasts between deep brown, bursts of satin, cold metal and side light. Its small formats concentrate the figures as if on a stage, where every gesture counts. Died prematurely at thirty-six years old, he left a tight but decisive work for Dutch genre painting and for the imagination of the soldier out of combat. The selection "Willem Cornelisz.
