Willem Drost was probably born in Leiden or Amsterdam in 1633 and disappeared from the sources after 1663. His brief career remains partly mysterious, but the signed paintings make it possible to follow a very distinct personality within Rembrandt's circle. He probably formed in the master's workshop in Amsterdam in the early 1650s. He retained the concentrated light, the impasto which made the flesh vibrate, the attention to the fabrics and above all the ability to transform a biblical subject into immediate human experience. Bathsheba receiving David's letter offers the most famous example: far from the spectacular anecdote, Drost isolates the young woman at the moment when the royal message turns his destiny upside down. The light paper, the jewel, the warm skin and the absorbed gaze compose a meditation on choice and vulnerability. Young Woman with a Pearl Necklace and The Sibyl extend this fascination with mid-body figures, shrouded in shadow and made present by a few bursts of light. Around the mid-1650s, Drost left the Netherlands for Italy. He was documented in Rome, where he worked with Johann Carl Loth and met a more theatrical baroque, nourished by Titian and the great Venetians. His Italian works gained movement and color without losing their inner gravity. Certain attributions have long been confused with those of Rembrandt, proof of both its proximity and its quality. Today, Drost appears as an autonomous painter: his art tightens the drama around a face, a hand or a letter and makes chiaroscuro the very language of consciousness.
