1619 -1693 · Rotterdam, Paris and Amsterdam, splendor of still life
Willem Kalf was born in Rotterdam in 1619 and died in Amsterdam in 1693. Coming from a wealthy background linked to the textile trade, he chose painting very early and stayed in Paris from the end of the 1630s. His first works were not yet the sumptuous tables that would make him famous: he painted modest kitchen interiors, barns and utensils, bathed in warm light. These rustic scenes, close to the bambochades, already reveal his sense of materials and space. Back in the Netherlands in the mid-1640s, then installed in Amsterdam in 1653, Kalf profoundly renewed the prestigious still life, or pronkstilleven. On a dark table, he brought together a goldsmith's cup, chinese Wanli porcelain, Venetian glass, lemon, peach, oriental rug and shell. He does not seek accumulation: each object has its distance, its reflection and its quality of silence. In Still Life with Fruits, Glassware and Wanli Bowl, light slides from the metal to the glass then to the skin of the fruit, making transparency, roughness and radiance visible. A discreet diagonal animates the composition, while the dark background amplifies the depth of colors. The richness evokes Amsterdam's commercial networks, but the burnt lemon, delicate glass and ripe fruit also recall the fragility of pleasure. Kalf reduces his painted production after the 1660s and becomes merchant, expert and referee appreciated in the art world. His influence runs through all of European still life: he transforms precious objects into luminous events and gives luxury an almost meditative gravity. The "Willem Kalf" selection notably compares Interior of a Kitchen and Still Life with fruits, glassware and the Wanli bowl. His reading favors color.
Kalf does not draw up an inventory of luxury: he composes a circulation of light where each material becomes rare, fragile and silent.
