1627 -after 1683 · Delft, Florence and Amsterdam, still life in motion
Willem van Aelst was born in Delft in 1627 and disappeared from the sources after 1683 in Amsterdam. Probably trained by his uncle, the still life painter Evert van Aelst, he was admitted to the guild of Saint Luke of Delft at a very young age. His career quickly took on a European dimension. He worked in Paris, then stayed for several years in Florence in the service of Cardinals Gian Carlo and Leopoldo de' Medici. This time at the Tuscan court refined his taste for rare objects, elegance and scholarly staging; he sometimes signed with the Italian form of his first name, Guill.mo. Back in the Netherlands, Van Aelst settled in Amsterdam and became one of the most sought-after still life painters. It represents flowers, fruits, pieces of goldwork and hunting trophies with exceptional precision. However, his compositions are never simple catalogs. Still life with flowers with watch breaks with the traditional frontal bouquet: the stems follow a sharp diagonal, the flowers emerge by degrees from the darkness and strong luminous contrasts produce tension and movement. The watch placed near the vase introduces the passage of time into the very heart of brilliance. In Grapes, Peaches and Large Glass, crystal transparency, velvety skin and ripe fruit become a demonstration of matter as much as a meditation on fragility. Flies, butterflies, curved leaves and tiny reflections animate the silence. Van Aelst is among the first specialists in hunting trophies and notably trains Rachel Ruysch, who will extend her art of dynamic bouquet. His work unites international refinement, naturalistic observation and awareness of time: everything seems precious because it is rendered at the exact moment when its beauty could already disappear. The "Willem van Aelst" selection notably compares Still Life with Flowers with Watches and Grapes, Peaches and Large Glass. His reading favors figures.
Van Aelst sets still life in motion: the diagonal leads flowers, light and a look towards the fleeting brilliance of time.
