Amsterdam or The Hague -London, 1656 -1687 · Elegance of court
Willem Wissing was born in 1656, probably in Amsterdam or The Hague, and died prematurely in 1687 in Stamford, England. Trained in the Netherlands, he moved to London around 1676 and entered the studio of Peter Lely, principal portraitist at the court of Charles II. After Lely's death in 1680, Wissing quickly obtained important aristocratic and royal commissions. The Portrait of a Woman from the Metropolitan Museum, painted around 1687 in oil on canvas, measures 126.4 × 102.2 cm. The Portrait of a Woman from the Metropolitan Museum, painted around 1687 in oil on canvas, measures 126.4 × 102.2 cm. The anonymous model is presented according to the international vocabulary of court portraiture: imposing scale, generous fabrics, lit flesh and decoration intended to suggest rank and ease. However, the image does not rest not just on accessories. The calm face, the direction of gaze and the flexible transition between skin and costume prevent the pageantry from becoming rigid. Produced at the end of his short career, the painting shows how a Dutch painter assimilates Lely's English tradition while maintaining precise attention to materials. The "Willem Wissing" selection notably compares Portrait of a Woman. His reading favors composition.
At Wissing, the grandeur of the format does not make the model disappear: the ceremonial becomes the setting for a face that is still accessible.
