Willem Wissing was born in 1656, probably in Amsterdam or The Hague, and died prematurely in 1687 in Stamford, England. Trained in the Netherlands, he moved to London around 1676 and entered the studio of Peter Lely, principal portraitist at the court of Charles II. After Lely's death in 1680, Wissing quickly obtained important aristocratic and royal commissions.
