Willy Schlobach was born in Brussels in 1864 into a family of German origin. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, he belonged at a very young age to the circle which founded the Brussels group Les XX in 1883. This association exhibits without a jury the newest research in Belgium and invites Seurat, Signac, Whistler, Van Gogh and Gauguin. Schlobach paints portraits, landscapes and especially views of the coastline, dunes and changing waters. His touch gradually divides under the influence of impressionism and neo-impressionism, but retains a freer atmosphere than the rigorous application of a scientific method. Blues, mauves, roses and yellows make the air vibrate between sky and sea. He also exhibited in Germany and developed a career shared between Belgian and Germanic circles. After the dissolution of the XX in 1893, his name partially faded behind those of Ensor, Van Rysselberghe and Khnopff.
