William Dyce was born in Aberdeen in 1806 and died in Streatham, near London, in 1864. His curious intelligence embraced art, music, theology, medicine and geology. After initial training in Scotland and a stint in London, he traveled to Italy in 1825 and then from 1827 to 1830. The study of Raphael and the masters of the early Renaissance, as well as his meeting with the German Nazarenes in Rome, directed him towards a painting with a clear drawing, light colors and serious spirituality. Back in Edinburgh, Dyce worked as a portrait painter and taught at the Trustees' Academy. His role soon went beyond the studio: called to London, he became the first director of the Government School of Design and contributed deeply to the reform of British artistic education. His knowledge of frescoes also earned him consultation and then commitment to the great decorations of the new Palace of Westminster. He mainly painted religious, literary and medieval subjects, but shared with the young Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood a taste for exact detail, firm contours and a nature observed without convention. Pegwell Bay, Kent: memory of October 5, 1858 is his most famous landscape and an exceptional synthesis of his interests.
