Witold Wojtkiewicz was born in Warsaw in 1879 and died in the same city in 1909, at only twenty-nine years old. The son of a bank employee, he showed a talent for drawing early on, but his training followed a difficult path. He attended the Warsaw Drawing School, worked briefly in Léon Wyczółkowski's studio in Krakow then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts with Józef Unierzyski. Wojtkiewicz belongs to the climate of Young Poland, but his world remains deeply personal. Clowns, pierrots, dolls, horsemen and sovereigns seem to belong to a theater whose rules have become meaningless. With several young artists, he founded the Group of Five in 1905, which defends an imagination nourished by literature and romanticism against the simple imitation of nature. His cycles, notably Ceremonies and Chivalrous Tales, use tempera, oil, drawing and lithography to create dull surfaces in muted colors. The Kidnapping of the King's Daughter belongs to this imagination. The princess, the kidnappers and the landscape do not tell an adventure traditional heroic: mechanical attitudes, unstable proportions and suspended atmosphere transform the tale into a disturbing dream. André Gide discovered his work during an exhibition in Berlin and contributed to the organization of a presentation in Paris in 1907, rare international recognition for a Polish artist of his generation. Suffering from a serious heart disease, Wojtkiewicz knows his life is threatened. His latest images, including the Pierrot chained from a symbolic self-portrait, combine irony, helplessness and awareness of death. In just a decade, he invented an intimate expressionism where childhood, theater and fable reveal the fragility of social conventions.
