Russian constructivism replaces the autonomous image with construction: relief, poster, theater, textile and monumental project must organize materials and act in society.
Russian constructivism developed in the ferment of the avant-garde around the Revolution of 1917. Vladimir Tatlin's counter-reliefs, exhibited in the mid-1910s, abandoned the pictorial illusion to assemble wood, metal and real tension, sometimes directly in the corner of a room. In Moscow, the Inkhuk debates led in 1921 to a group where Rodchenko, Popova, Stepanova, Vesnin and their relatives defended a materialist practice. The artist must become a builder, understand the properties of materials and participate in production. Poster, photomontage, stage, clothing, typography and architecture then took on new importance. El Lissitzky, Exter, Kliun, Matiouchine and Malevich cross this story from sometimes different positions: Proun, cubo-futurism and suprematism are not identical to constructivism, but nourish the same field of experimentation. The collection restores this constellation without erasing its internal debates, between abstraction, social utility and technical utopia.
