Born in Drammen in 1877 and raised in Kristiania, Halfdan Egedius revealed exceptional talent from childhood. At nine years old, he attended the painting school of Knud Bergslien; he then studied with Erik Werenskiold, Eilif Peterssen, Harriet Backer and briefly Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen. At sixteen, Lørdagskveld already attracted attention with his summer night atmosphere in the Telemark. During several stays in Bø, Kviteseid and Vågardia, Egedius painted farms, landscapes, dances, peasants and artist friends.
