Born in Drammen in 1877 and raised in Kristiania, Halfdan Egedius revealed exceptional talent from childhood. At nine years old, he attended the painting school of Knud Bergslien; he then studied with Erik Werenskiold, Eilif Peterssen, Harriet Backer and briefly Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen. At sixteen, Lørdagskveld already attracted attention with his summer night atmosphere in the Telemark. During several stays in Bø, Kviteseid and Vågardia, Egedius painted farms, landscapes, dances, peasants and artist friends. In Drømmeren, the pose of the painter Torleiv Stadskleiv, the light on the ground and the concentrated reds make a rural interior a modern meditation. Opptrekkende uvær transforms the approach of a storm into the colorful tension of the landscape. An excellent designer, Egedius was chosen by Werenskiold to illustrate the prestigious edition of the Heimskringla, the royal sagas of Snorri. His historical scenes combine observation, powerful silhouettes and narrative intelligence. Having fallen ill in 1898, he died in February 1899 before he was twenty-two. Despite a very brief career, his corpus of paintings and drawings had a lasting influence on the Norwegian national imagination. The "Halfdan Egedius" selection offers its own journey on this subject. His reading favors composition.
Egedius gives rise to the drama of silence: a cloudy sky, a patch of sunlight or a motionless figure are enough to transform the landscape into a state of mind.
