1880 -1916 · German expressionism, Blaue Reiter and animal symbolism
Franz Marc was born in Munich in 1880, son of the painter Wilhelm Marc. After considering theology and philosophy, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1900. Two trips to Paris, in 1903 and 1907, introduced him to impressionism, Van Gogh and Gauguin. He gradually left academic naturalism to concentrate his painting on animals, which he considered to be the symbol of a world purer than human civilization. Installed in the landscapes of the Bavarian foothills, in Lenggries then Sindelsdorf, he observed horses, cows, deer and foxes until understanding their movements as forms integrated into the earth. His meeting with August Macke in 1910 and then with Wassily Kandinsky led to the founding of the Blaue Reiter in 1911. Marc then developed a personal symbolism of color: blue can carry a spiritual dimension, yellow a sensitive energy, red a heavy or violent force. Animals are no longer simply placed in the landscape; their bodies, trees and mountains are built by the same curves and colored planes. Under the influence of cubism, futurism and Robert Delaunay, the shapes are further fragmented. In Destins d'animals, the shapes seem to be caught in a prophetic catastrophe. Marc seeks to see the world through the eyes of the animal: color, body and landscape must find a unity prior to man.
