Understand movement

The Nabis, when painting becomes a decorative surface

At the end of the 1880s, a group of young artists brought together a new vision of painting around Paul Sérusier. The word "Nabi", from Hebrew, means "prophet". These painters want to renew art through color, flat areas, rhythm and the link between painting and decoration.

01

Flat colors

Volumes fade in favor of bold, simplified and expressive colored areas.

02

Modern privacy

Living rooms, gardens, meals, rooms and family scenes become poetic subjects.

03

Decorative surface

Patterns, wallpapers, fabrics and arabesques organize the painting as an independent decor.

04

Symbol and spirituality

In Maurice Denis or Paul Sérusier, formal simplicity also carries an interior dimension.
