Artwork description
Claude Monet · Sassenheim · 1886 · W1070
In Sassenheim, rows of red, yellow and pink tulips cross the fields horizontally. A mill, low houses and a line of trees occupy the distance under a cloudy blue sky. Signed Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 59.7 × 73 cm is kept at the Clark Art Institute under number 1955.615 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1070.

Look at the work
The field in the foreground is divided into long, almost parallel bands. Red dominates in the center, framed by yellow, pink, green and earthy passages. On the horizon, the mill and the roofs give a precise scale to this vast expanse.
The touch varies according to the planes: short and tight in the flowers, more horizontal in the ground, more supple in the sky. White and gray-blue clouds lighten the composition and prevent the colored bands from appearing decorative.
Monet finds in tulip crops a geometry already present in the landscape, then brings it to life through the irregularities of touch and color.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Parallel cultures organize perspective by their width and color changes. They guide the gaze towards the thin line of the village.
Its narrow silhouette interrupts the horizon without becoming the main subject. She immediately sets the scene in Holland.
The reds and yellows of the flowers remain intense, but the bluish sky and gray greens of the terrain incorporate them into the general light.
Reference image
The single reference image has been preserved at its native definition of 2000 × 1650 px and encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The succession of reds, yellows, pinks and greens is specific to W1070 and must remain readable without becoming too regular.
It must remain on a distant scale and not be artificially enlarged or accentuated.
Each row features breaks and mixes that feel like a real culture rather than a plain ribbon.
Documented benchmarks
The Clark Art Institute documents Tulip Fields at Sassenheim, oil on canvas from 1886, 59.7 × 73 cm, signed Claude Monet 86, inventory 1955.615 and catalog Wildenstein 1070.
Monet returned to Holland in the spring of 1886 and worked in the Sassenheim region, southwest of Amsterdam, where the fields were in bloom.
The countryside produces a tight group of five canvases. This version combines the cultivated strips with a mill and a village very low on the horizon.
Sterling Clark purchased the work in May 1933. It then entered the museum he founded and today bears the 1955.615 inventory.
