Claude Monet · 1897 · ex-Brooklyn Museum 68.48.2 · W1493

The Islands in Port-Villez, ex-Brooklyn W1493hand painted reproduction

In Port-Villez, a long wooded island stretches above an almost immobile Seine. The summit gathers to the right and gradually lowers to the left, where a small islet lets a strip of light pass through. The trees do not end on the bank: their green, blue and mauve colors descend into the water and double the height of the pattern.

Look at the work

The island and its reflection form a single mass suspended in the bluish pink light of a morning on the Seine

The composition is based on a large horizontal shape, but its upper contour varies constantly. The trees rise in small groups, peak to the right then fade to the left. A clear opening separates the small islet from the main mass and prevents the landscape from closing.

Under the bank, the vertical touches are longer and more spaced apart. They take up the green and purple of the trees, then mingle with the pale pink of the reflected sky. This lower part is not a mirror: it widens the shapes and introduces clear intervals which give mobility to the water.

The simplicity of the pattern relies on very precise adjustment of voids, values and reflections; reinforcing the contours would make the mist disappear.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A plant mass in several stages

The crown progresses from the small islet to the tallest trees. These height differences give movement to a frontal view and must remain readable under the foggy touch.

02

Light passes through the left interval

The light strip between the two islets opens the Seine towards the background. Its width and color constitute an essential reference point for maintaining the depth of the painting.

03

Reflections stretched towards the foreground

The purple and green verticals descend lower than the silhouette rises. They give weight to the water while maintaining a soft and irregular surface.

Read this specific version

The only photograph in the Sotheby's lot measures 2,000 × 1,605 px. It has been converted into a real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A framing without narrative element

Neither boat, nor character, nor architecture looks away. All attention is focused on the distance between the island, its reflection and the surrounding mist.

Color02

Pale pink versus blue green

The heat of the sky and the water frames the cold plant masses. The two families of colors must penetrate each other at the edges instead of suddenly opposing each other.

Matter03

A shorter touch in the trees

The foliage uses compact, layered markings, while the reflection lengthens the gestures. This difference in direction distinguishes the water bank despite the absence of a clear line.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These markers document version W1493 of the Islands at Port Villez, former inventory 68.48.2 of the Brooklyn Museum.

Work01

An oil on canvas from 1897, Wildenstein 1493

The painting measures 83.5 × 100.4 cm. It is signed "Claude Monet" and dated 97 lower left; Daniel Wildenstein reproduces it under number 1493.

Brooklyn Museum02

The legacy of Grace Underwood Barton

After Cornelius Vanderbilt Barton, the work passed to Grace Underwood Barton. Her 1968 legacy brought her to the Brooklyn Museum under number 68.48.2.

Exhibition history03

From New York to Madrid, Seoul and Ordrupgaard

The Sotheby's notice lists numerous presentations, including Madrid in 1986, several exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, an Asian tour and Monet: Beyond Impressionism at Ordrupgaard in 2016.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The old painting from the Brooklyn Museum, 68.48.2 and Wildenstein 1493
  • The exact horizontal ratio of 83.5 × 100.4 cm
  • The left light opening preserved between the two islands
  • The difference in touch maintained between compact foliage and vertical reflection
