Adeline Ravoux, daughter of the innkeeper who lives in Van Gogh in Auvers, is represented in profile in front of a blue-black background. Her turquoise dress, her raised blonde hair and two white flowers concentrate the light.

Look at the work

The profile of a teenage girl in a blue-black square

Adeline turns her chest towards the viewer but presents her face in profile. Her hair is tied with a turquoise ribbon that falls over her shoulder. The yellow and green touches of the hairstyle stand out strongly from the almost black background.

The sea green dress is closed with a white collar top and opens in a small triangle on the chest. Two white roses appear in the lower right corner. The background, constructed by blue, green and black layers, is never a uniform surface.

The portrait combines a reserved pose with a very free color: the resemblance is constructed as much by the profile as by the harmony of turquoise and black.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The 1958.31 work can be recognized by its almost square format, the profile facing right, the turquoise ribbon and the two white flowers.

01

A very cut profile

Forehead, nose, mouth and chin form a continuous line against the dark background. Van Gogh reinforces this silhouette with some pink and green accents.

02

Turquoise as a link

The color of the dress returns to the hair ribbon. This reminder connects the head to the bust and balances the large blue-black area of the background.

03

Two flowers as counterpoint

White roses respond to the light on the face and collar. Their thick material brings a second presence without looking away from the model.

Documented benchmarks

Memory

A portrait she didn't like

The museum reports that Adeline did not consider herself similar. A photograph taken much later, however, reveals very similar features.

Don

Bequest Leonard C. Hanna Jr.

The painting entered the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1958 thanks to the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. and has been in the inventory since 1958.31.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the profile, the direction of the touches in the hair and the differences between turquoise, pale green and blue-black.

  • The outline of the profile and the pink touches of the face
  • The turquoise ribbon attached to the hair
  • The sea green dress and her little white collar
  • The two white roses on the blue-black background
