Trees and undergrowth, F309aReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A green forest is dotted with red, blue and yellow dots; the lilac trunk on the right and a band of light in the middle open the depth in this Parisian experiment close to pointillism.

Look at the work

An undergrowth built by divided color

Dozens of thin trunks fill the frame, with no visible sky. The ground is covered with white, green and pink touches, while a small yellow opening appears in the center.

The points and short lines change density depending on the light. The large purple trunk on the right closes the composition and serves as a counterweight to the central thinning.

The Van Gogh Museum presents this landscape as a clear example of the artist's pointillist experiences in Paris: the entire surface is animated by small touches that bring light and shadow into play.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The canvas s0066V1962 measures 46.2 × 55.2 cm and bears the references F309a/JH1312. It is dated July 1887.

01

Punctuation across the entire surface

Small touches are not limited to foliage. They also cover the ground and gray areas, unifying the picture with their rhythm.

02

The yellow band of the distance

The museum highlights this narrow bright area: it suggests a clearing and creates depth among the tight trees.

03

The purple trunk as an anchor

Placed at the right edge, this thick vertical visually advances towards the viewer and reinforces the gap with the distant undergrowth.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice links the painting to Van Gogh's Parisian research on the juxtaposition of colors and the play of light between trees.

Technique

A free variation of pointillism

Van Gogh uses short dots and strokes rather than a regular frame, in order to maintain a moving and personal touch.

Light

A suggested clearing

The yellow stripe in the center is enough to evoke a sunny opening beyond the first curtain of trees.

Museum

An official zoomable image

The Van Gogh Museum publishes s0066V1962 with a high definition reproduction which makes the small colored touches readable.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the density of the small keys without making them mechanical, while keeping the purple trunk and the yellow clearing legible.

  • Red and blue dots
  • The carpet of light touches on the floor
  • The central yellow stripe
  • The large lilac trunk on the right
  • The depth between the trees
