A diagonal that opens the entire bay
The slope of the cape guides the gaze from near to far without a drawn line of perspective. Changes in scale and color are enough to create depth.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Cap d'Antibes · 1888 · W1185
A pink and ocher rocky coast juts out into a Mediterranean covered in blues, greens and purples, under a sky almost erased by light. Painted in 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 65.1 × 81.3 cm is kept at the Columbus Museum of Art under number 1957.061.064 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1185.

Look at the work
The shore enters from the upper left corner, then recedes in a long pink diagonal to the horizon. The sea occupies more than half of the canvas and fills the crevices of the rocks in the foreground.
The rock mixes cream, pink, mauve and red earth; the water superimposes deep blue, turquoise, green and lilac. No rigid outline separates the two elements: their colors circulate and make the reverberation of the sun noticeable.
Monet does not paint a blue sea in front of a pink coast; it builds a continuous exchange of colors where water reflects stone and stone receives light from water.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The slope of the cape guides the gaze from near to far without a drawn line of perspective. Changes in scale and color are enough to create depth.
Nearby rocks are formed of short, thick and contrasting touches. Their material opposes the more horizontal and more fluid lines used for the sea.
Monet stayed on the Côte d'Azur from January to May and produced around thirty-five views. He is looking for writing capable of translating a more intense light than that of Normandy.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W1185 is used. The real WebP measures 2504 × 1980 px and retains the native definition of the source, without artificial enlargement.
Creams, purples, oranges and browns must remain visible. These breaks give the rocks their relief and their exposure to the sun.
Blues, greens and mauves are juxtaposed in short lines. A continuous blue surface would remove the transparency and vibration of the foreground.
It takes up little space and remains very pale. Its role is to open the horizon without competing with the dense matter of the coast and the water.
Documented benchmarks
The Columbus Museum of Art preserves La Méditerranée, Cap d'Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 65.1 × 81.3 cm, legacy Frederick W. Schumacher, inventory 1957.061.064 and Wildenstein 1185.
The work entered the Columbus Museum of Art in 1957 and remains one of the major Mediterranean views of the museum's European collection.
Monet approaches the rocky shore and avoids the old town here. The main motif becomes the direct encounter between stone, sea and light.
Its very clear diagonal coast, its sea occupying the foreground and its absence of architecture allow it to be distinguished from the other landscapes of Antibes painted the same year.

This bright navy is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A mineral blue, powder pink or stone beige wall and a natural setting extend its Mediterranean contrast.
