The final version of the composition
Van Gogh considered the great study of June as a first impression. In September, confined to his room, he took the pattern on the same scale to make a more constructed version.

Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
A field of gold, a silver olive tree and two dark cypresses stand out in front of the Alpilles. In this large version completed in the workshop, Van Gogh resumes his June study and gives each element the same continuous movement, even in the clouds.
Look at the work
The wheat forms a wide yellow band in the foreground, hollowed out by green and ocher curves. A gray-green olive tree occupies the left, while the two almost black cypresses rise to the clouds on the right.
The blue Alpilles draw a low, jagged line. Above, large white, turquoise and lilac clouds rotate on themselves and extend the contours of the trees.
Cypress trees stabilize the landscape without immobilizing it: their vertical acts as a pivot around which the field, hills and sky circulate.
Composition, touch and color
The National Gallery keeps this painting under the NG3861 inventory. It measures 72.1 × 90.9 cm and bears the references F615/JH1755.
Van Gogh considered the great study of June as a first impression. In September, confined to his room, he took the pattern on the same scale to make a more constructed version.
The tall, narrow silhouette offers the darkest spot in the landscape. Van Gogh admired its proportions and wanted to give the cypress an importance comparable to that of sunflowers.
The ears, leaves, mountains and clouds are painted in families of curves. This repetition gives the impression that the mistral animates each plane simultaneously.
Documented benchmarks
Wheat field with cypress F615/JH1755 was completed in September 1889. The painting bears inventory NG3861 in the National Gallery.
The motif exists in three paintings: the live study F717 at the Met, this cover of the same format F615 and the small variant F743 from the Niarchos collection.
After a relapse, Van Gogh could not temporarily go out. He therefore developed this composition internally, based on his previous study.
The work entered the British national collections in 1923. First presented at the Tate, it was transferred to the National Gallery in 1961.
